Top 20 HR Interview Questions and Answers for Freshers (2026)

HR interviews are more predictable than any exam you've written — the same core questions appear every time. Prepare these and you'll walk in calmer than 90% of candidates.
1. Tell me about yourself
Use Present → Past → Future, 60-90 seconds: "I recently completed my B.Tech in Computer Science with an 8.4 CGPA. During college I built two full-stack projects, including an event-management app used by 2,000 students, and completed a Python internship. I'm now looking for a developer role where I can contribute from week one and grow with a strong team." Don't recite your resume or your life story.
2. Why should we hire you?
Connect their need to your proof: "You need someone who can learn your stack quickly — my projects show I pick up new tools fast: I learned React in three weeks to ship my final-year project."
3. What are your strengths?
Pick two, each with evidence. Strength without a story is just an adjective.
4. What is your weakness?
Real weakness + active fix: "I used to over-prepare before starting tasks. I now timebox research to a fixed limit and start building sooner." Never "I'm a perfectionist", never a disqualifying flaw.
5. Salary expectations?
Research the market band first, then: "Based on the market for this role, something in the range of X–Y, though the learning opportunity matters most to me at this stage."
6. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Growth within their world: deeper skills, ownership, mentoring — not "your chair" and not "abroad".
Rapid-fire: the other 14
- Why this company? — mention one specific product/value; never "good brand name".
- Why this role? — connect to skills you already show.
- Describe a challenge you overcame — STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
- Team conflict? — show listening, not winning.
- Are you open to relocation/shifts? — decide before the interview; answer honestly.
- Marks are low — why? — one line, no excuses, redirect to skills built.
- Gap after graduation? — honest single line + what you did with the time.
- Leadership example? — college fest, NSS, project lead all count.
- Biggest achievement? — one story with a number in it.
- How do you handle pressure/deadlines? — real example, calm process.
- What do you know about us? — 3 facts from their website/news.
- Other offers? — honest and brief.
- Questions for us? — always ask 2: "What does success look like in 6 months?" and "What's the team I'd join like?"
- Anything else? — 30-second closing pitch, thank them.
